MANAGING BACK-TO-SCHOOL ANXIETY: TOP ADVICE FOR PARENTS

Going back to school after enjoying the long, sunny days of summer is a source of angst for many children, especially those who already struggle with anxiety. Parents should pay close attention to their children as summer winds down,” says Amy Edgar, APRN, CRNP, FNP-C, founder of the Children’s Integrated Center for Success (CICS), a multidisciplinary treatment center in Allentown, Pennsylvania. “Behavior changes and other indicators of stress are possible clues of their child’s school-related anxiety.”

Understanding the signs of stress

The return to school brings forward many potential stressors for children. In a survey published by the American Psychological Association (APA), teens reported that their stress levels peaked during the school year with homework, romantic relationships and peer interactions among the major challenges. For younger children, separation from parents is also a significant contributor to stress.

While anxiety coinciding with the school year is normal for children, parents should look for warning signs that their child may be struggling beyond what is typical. “There is a very common pattern and feature to the behavior of children who are under stress as it relates to school,” says Edgar.

Children who may be experiencing above-average difficulty coping may show changes in their behavior that include:

  • Significant changes in daily habits including loss of appetite, not sleeping and wetting the bed.
  • Increased signs of worrying, acting sad and withdrawing from social interactions.
  • Marked increase in physical complaints, such as tiredness, stomach pain and headaches.

“In school-age children, anxiety shows up most commonly in physical complaints, as well as shutdown behaviors like not doing homework and missing school activities,” says Edgar. “This anxiety can be a forerunner of even more anxious behaviors.”

When to take next steps

Given the abrupt transition from the casualness of summer to the rigors of school, Edgar advises that parents give their kids time to make the adjustment.

“Kids need time to adapt to changes in their routine,” says Edgar. “In the summer they stay up later, but when school starts they have to wake up earlier. As a result, they all experience fatigue and are a little less resilient during the first few weeks of school. After several weeks, many children recover from the change from summer and adjust to the demands of the new school year.”

For Edgar, what raises a red flag is when children are avoiding school-related activities or still exhibiting anxiety behaviors after the first few weeks of school.

“If children haven’t recovered after the first three weeks of school and are still showing signs of anxiety and stress, including irritability and oppositional behavior, then it’s time for parents to take a deeper look at what’s happening,” says Edgar.

As mental illness continues to escalate among children and teens, Edgar cautions parents to be wary of potential mental health issues as the underlying cause of their child’s back-to-school anxiety. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five children in the U.S. ages 13 to 18 have, or will have, a serious mental illness. NAMI also highlights that 37% of students with a mental health condition age 14 and older drop out of school — the highest dropout rate of any disability group.

“A mental health evaluation can help uncover underlying challenges that their kids may be struggling with,” says Edgar. “In some cases, the cause may not be anxiety at all, but rather deeper clinical issues such as attention challenges including ADHD and mechanical disabilities such as dysgraphia, which is a brain-based learning challenge that affects writing and fine motor skills.”

Finding answers with genetic testing

When evaluating children for mental health-related concerns, Edgar casts a broad net to best understand each specific child and the issues they are dealing with. This includes the use of a simple cheek-swab genetic test from Genomind, a Pennsylvania-based mental health care company. She sees genetic testing as a valuable tool in the front end of the evaluation process.

“We use the Genomind genetic testing service early on to help us understand each child and gain the neuroscientific data that may explain their behavior,” says Edgar. “Genetic testing enables us to build a portrait of the child. It helps us evaluate what’s going on with the child at the biochemical level and we use that information to guide how we can support them.”

Whether it’s helping children and parents address back-to-school anxiety or manage behavioral challenges and stress during the school year, Edgar says it’s critical to be proactive.

“The goal is to use every possible touch point in the life of a child to build a deeper understanding about your child,” she says. “When you understand the reasons behind the challenges they face, you can create a plan for their success.”

TIPS FOR FINDING AND BUYING YOUR FIRST HOME

Are you ready to buy your first home? Venturing into the home buying market can be daunting, but I’m here to share my experience and help you find your new home!

Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Save your pennies. The up-front costs of buying a home are higher than expected for many first-time homebuyers. You’ll need to save up not just for your down payment, but also for closing costs, inspection fees and the cost to move.

2. Check your credit score. You are entitled to a free credit report each year. Before applying for a mortgage, find out whether there are any discrepancies on your report and where you can improve. The better your credit score, the lower your mortgage rate.

3. Figure out how much you can spend. You will need to get pre-approved from at least one lender for a mortgage, though getting at least three pre-approvals is preferred so you can get the best mortgage rate and terms. To start, use a simple online mortgage payment calculator to estimate how much house your desired monthly payment and down payment will qualify you for.

4. Narrow your home search. Make a list of your favorite neighborhoods, what kind of home features you can’t live without and any other criteria. This will help your agent target your search. Finding the right agent to work with is key to getting an offer accepted on the home you want. I have years of experience assisting clients find their first home.

4 TIPS TO HELP ACHIEVE A HEALTHY PREGANCY

(BPT) - Oftentimes the joy and excitement of pregnancy is matched with feelings of uncertainty and doubt, especially when it comes to managing health issues during pregnancy. Between their own mothers, their friends and, at times, obtrusive strangers, women are frequently bombarded with conflicting advice, prompting soon-to-be moms to question what is accurate, relevant and safe for their own pregnancy. According to a recent Monistat survey, 84 percent of women who have been or are currently pregnant admit to experiencing doubts regarding the health choices they made during pregnancy.

To help moms-to-be fight the confusion, Dr. Alyssa Dweck, OB-GYN, author, expert on women's health and Monistat spokesperson, shares a few tips to help expecting mothers make healthy choices for themselves and their little ones' well-being.

1) Do your research.

While certainly well-meaning, the advice women receive from friends or loved ones may not necessarily be the most accurate or up to date. With advancements in medical research each year, health guidelines for pregnancy are often changing and that can lead to confusion for mom, especially when decades of great mothers before her likely weren't privy to the latest guidance. Especially when it comes to health choices, it's best to cross-examine pregnancy advice or recommendations from mothers, relatives and close friends with input from a medical healthcare professional or trusted medical website.

2) Take caution in how you treat common pregnancy symptoms.

While women often modify what they eat and change the household cleaning supplies they use while pregnant, many aren't aware that treatment options for common health issues can vary for pregnant women. For example, vaginal yeast infections are up to 10 times more likely to occur during pregnancy. However, according to a 2019 Canadian study, women who take any dose of fluconazole (the leading prescription pill to treat yeast infections) during pregnancy are at an increased miscarriage risk and there may be a link between high levels of fluconazole and increased risk of heart defects in the fetus. Instead, Dweck recommends Monistat 7 for her patients with vaginal yeast infections, as it meets CDC guidelines for treating yeast infections in pregnant women. Nevertheless, women should always check with their own healthcare providers before using any treatment during pregnancy.

3) Eat and exercise wisely.

A pregnant woman is eating for both herself and her baby and with that responsibility come changes to her diet and exercise plan that can aid in a healthy pregnancy. Eating a healthy diet filled with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and foods low in saturated fat, as well as avoiding foods like raw meat, sushi and unpasteurized cheeses, can benefit mom and baby. Staying active while pregnant is key in controlling weight, and exercise can help reduce stress, improve circulation and mom's overall well-being.

4) Sleep when you can.

As a woman's body changes, her sleeping habits change too, with many often finding it difficult to either fall or stay asleep. However, sleep is crucial in helping moms-to-be feel their best. Dweck recommends women try to get at least seven hours of sleep by staying in bed a little longer, sleeping on their sides after 16 weeks, and taking smaller naps throughout the day to make up for any lost shuteye.

Though doubt and confusion can be present during pregnancy, trusted products and healthcare professionals can help expectant mothers determine what's best for their own pregnancies. For more information on treating yeast infections during pregnancy, visit www.monistat7.com.

NOTE: A 2016 Danish study looked into the possible risk of miscarriage when taking fluconazole (the leading prescription pill) to treat yeast infections during pregnancy, and a second study in 2019 in Canada has raised similar concerns. While the FDA is reviewing these studies, it advises caution using fluconazole and recommends considering alternative treatment options during pregnancy.

7 IDEAS TO GIVE YOUR BARBECUE THE ULTIMATE FLAVOR BOOST

(BPT) - When the temps heat up, home cooks look for lighter, more refreshing food and drinks that still pack a nutritional punch. The cranberry is just the thing - a tangy fruit that adds flavorful zing to sweet and savory recipes. Available dried, frozen, as juice or sauce, cranberries are a good source of Vitamin C and have fiber and antioxidants as well. Offering big health benefits in a little package, cranberries are full of polyphenols not commonly found in other fruits. You can enjoy their robust flavor while boosting your health.

Here are some ideas for hosting a summer BBQ.

1. Quench your thirst

Cranberry juice makes a delightfully refreshing drink on its own or mixed with sparkling water and served on ice. For those who enjoy adult beverages, make a statement at your party with a festive, colorful pitcher of sangria served with fruit. Add cranberry juice to red wine for a zesty, delicious 21+ punch, with orange juice, orange slices and a little extra liquor like brandy or rum.

2. Keep your cool

Cranberry juice boosts the flavor of a fruit smoothie with its sweet and tart flavor. Combine with fruits, such as bananas or strawberries, and your favorite milk or yogurt, adding a little honey or agave if desired. Blend with crushed ice for a healthful smoothie for breakfast or any time you need a quick pick-me-up. The kids will love it. In preparation for extra hot days, make cranberry juice ice cubes or ice pops in your freezer.

3. Fire up the barbecue

A sure-fire hit is to combine cranberry sauce with mustard, vinegar and brown sugar to create a mouth-watering barbecue sauce for all your summer grilling. You'll have your guests trying to guess the secret ingredient providing delicious tang.

4. Satisfy your sweet tooth

For a refreshing summer treat, create a cranberry parfait in a glass by alternating layers of refreshing ingredients. Get creative and start with a base like crushed cookies, vanilla wafers or graham crackers (reserving some for the topping), then alternate layers of whipped cream, vanilla pudding or your favorite yogurt with jellied or whole berry cranberry sauce. Add a layer or two of fresh blueberries or strawberries for a red, white and blue dessert. Make it family-sized or create individual parfaits to offer your guests a personal treat.

5. Have a cranberry party

The robust cranberry can handle some heat, so create a salsa for your next party. Combine thawed, chopped frozen cranberries with Mexican flavors such as jalapeno, green onions, lime juice and cilantro to create a zesty salsa. Season with salt and sugar to taste.

6. Add zing to your snacks

Combine dried cranberries with nuts and seeds to make trail mix for your barbecue that all your guests will love to munch while you prepare the entrée. Add toasted coconut flakes or chocolate chips for a dose of sweetness.

7. Spruce up your salads

Adding dried cranberries gives any veggie or fruit salad an extra pop of flavor. This whole grain salad recipe from the Cranberry Marketing Committee shows one great way to use America's Original Superfruit, cranberries, in an "#AllAmeriCRAN," colorful summer dish.

Cranberry and Cilantro Quinoa Salad

* 2 cups water

* 3 tablespoons finely chopped red onion

* 3 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro

* 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice

* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

To the bowl of quinoa, stir in cranberries, carrots, peppers, onion and cilantro until mixed.

In a small bowl, mix together lime juice, oil, salt and ground red pepper and pour over quinoa-cranberry mixture; toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving. Does not have to be served cold.

TIPS FOR SANITIZING 5 HARD-TO-CLEAN ITEMS IN YOUR CHILDREN'S ROOMS

(BPT) - Every parent knows that keeping kids' rooms - and their stuff - sanitary can seem like a losing battle. Between the playdates, trips to the park and going back-and-forth from school to home, parents also worry about the amount of not just dirt, but also potentially harmful bacteria, living on all the toys, clothes and bedding in their children's rooms.

What are the best ways to make sure children's items are as clean and sanitary as possible? Here are some tips for sanitizing common, tough-to-clean items in your kids' rooms.

Baby's plastic toys

Babies put everything in their mouths. For the plastic toys your baby loves to carry, mouth and drop (not necessarily in that order), frequent cleaning is essential.

For completely plastic toys, with no other materials included, you could just soak and wash them in hot soapy water, rinsing well and air drying afterward. But to sanitize them, go a step further - put them through the dishwasher. Use the silverware holder or tie into a mesh bag to wash them on the gentlest cycle, then let them air dry. You may also want to wash plastic bathtub toys, which are not staying clean in the tub with your child. Distilled white vinegar diluted with water helps inhibit mold and mildew growth.

Stuffed animals

If your child has a favorite stuffed toy they love to live, play and sleep with, you know how hard it is to convince your child to part with it for a spin in the washing machine. But it's worth it to know that the stuffed toy they spend all their time with has been sanitized.

You may want to check the toy for rips or holes before washing, so no stuffing falls out. DIY expert Mandi Gubler shares helpful tips for sanitizing and repairing your child's favorite stuffed animals at her blog, Vintage Revivals.

Gubler recommends using Lysol Laundry Sanitizer, a one-of-a-kind product that's safe to use on washable fabric items. It kills 99.9% of bacteria, when used as directed, that regular detergents may leave behind. While washing stuffed animals with regular laundry detergent and cold water may clean dirt and add a fresh scent, it might not completely remove bacteria, including harmful bacteria that may cause illness such as staph infections. Add Lysol Laundry Sanitizer to the fabric softener compartment, following product directions, to help eliminate bacteria. Wash toys on the gentle cycle, and be careful not to launder toys with batteries or that make sounds.

Bedding

Wash bedding in hot water for the best results, although it's a good idea to check care labels for warnings about water temperature, especially the first time you wash anything. Mattress pads, however, should be washed in warm water. For special blankets, such as homemade baby blankets, use the gentle cycle for extra care.

Shoes

You can even wash children's sneakers in the washing machine. If you remove the shoelaces and soles, you can then wash the shoes in a mesh bag to launder using cold water. It's probably a good idea to use the gentle cycle and then allow shoes to air dry rather than putting them in the dryer.

Athletic wear

If you have kids in sports, you know how dirty athletic wear items can get, and how it seems like the odors never quite go away, no matter how much you wash them. The odor molecules caused by bacteria can become trapped in the synthetic fabrics of most athletic wear, so it's best to eliminate the odors at the source. Traditional fabric softeners and dryer sheets just mask odors and might damage clothing, but Lysol Laundry Sanitizer Sport is suitable for most athletic wear fabric, leaving it smelling fresh and clean. You can add it to your athletic wear load according to directions and wash in cold water. Be sure to follow specific care instructions about drying athletic wear items.

There's no need to surrender in the battle against dirt and bacteria living in your children's toys, bedding and clothing. Set a regular schedule for washing and sanitizing these tough items to help freshen up your child's bedroom and keep it looking and smelling cleaner.
